The story introduces us to a mother and a daughter – both remain unnamed throughout the film. The daughter’s unconditional love for her mother is met with lack of interest or affection from the parent, who keeps abandoning her child. A glimmer of mother’s emotion is shown when she gives the daughter a toy — a spinning top – volchok in Russian (which also means little wolf.) The girl, destined to grow up among brutality, manages to keep an open heart for her mother. The film captures an endless race of a mother running away in hopes of a better life for herself, yet making the same mistakes over again. The spinning-top rotation becomes the metaphor for this never-ending race, and the toy itself remains the only thing connecting the mother and the daughter. One day, the rotation stops.
